Anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombing

Today marks the two year anniversary of the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon, which left three spectators dead and injured 264 others. The marathon is a huge event not just for athletes and runners, but for the entire city of Boston.

This annual day of observance has been named “One Boston Day” and this morning a ceremony was held on Boylston street, where there was an unveiling of banners at the site of the two bombings.

The day was especially hard for victims and those affected by the attacks because of the ongoing Tsarneav trial, where many will be called to testify in the penalty phase, which begins on April 21.

While today was a day of observance, next Monday will be one of celebration as Bostonians partake in the 119th marathon. Over 1 million spectators are estimated to line the streets of Boston this coming Monday.

This day is especially meaningful to me because of my own connection with the attacks. They occurred in the spring semester of my freshman year at BU as many of my friends and I stood watching the marathon from the street. What was supposed to be a day of celebration and fun quickly turned into a nightmare. I hope that this ceremony and day of observance will give some comfort and peace to all of those effected by the attack.
